Banners in your inbox…

An email banner ad provider Glooq is introducing its service in the UK, after success in the rest of Europe. These banners will tap into 1,000 of emails sent by individual employees. (Brand Republic, 10.02.09)

The service can also be customized according to the content of each e-mail. Something similar comes to mind; Gmail has an ad space for its e-mail service (the link above your Inbox) where each ad-headline is customized to the content of your Inbox. But to introduce an actual moving banner in to your e-mails? I believe this will get frustrating very soon, as it is quite intrusive and most people won’t want rubbish in their personal e-mail content. It might fall into the same shoes as Direct Mail advertising, where it is just pure wastage most of the time.

Of course there is an exception to every rule, and with right targeting I believe this could be beneficial to some brands, especially if they are offering something good for the person they are targeting. Without a reward, I doubt anyone will be happy to have banners floating while they are reading their e-mails.
